If I have a large fruit such as an apple or a quince that I can't eat due to say, rust, worms or coddling moth, should I throw it away in the garbage or just let it rot in a different part of the yard, far away from the tree? I don't know if worms, moths, or rust could return from far away. I know the fruit still has a lot of nutrients in it, but is it worth it?
Thanks,

John, I have the same problem ... and was hoping someone would check in with a good answer...
I've got a couple acres worth of orchard and generally wheelbarrow (if they're not turned into juice when picked) those fruits 'down wind' of my trees and dump them into the woods. I assume whatever 'bug' is already in the environment and so well established as to not make much difference what I do with their offspring...
I'd read somewhere that apples didn't have many nutrients and weren't worth composting. But I’ve also tossed them onto my garden plots and tilled them in anyway. I hate to waste anything... but if I just leave the 'windfalls' laying around the tree long enough the deer, raccoon, and as of yesterday(!) the Varied Thrushes seem to enjoy them.
...But if anyone's got real advice speak up.
