Howdy, excellent orchardists:
I'm about to cut off branches branches I think need to be removed from my cordons -- but just in case I am making a fatal error, below are some pix of what I plan to do. The red lines indicate branches I am planning to lop off -- do I have the right idea?
The image function didn't seem to be working so I've just posted the image url. Thanks kindly, oh those who have boldly pruned before me ... D.
Those look like the right cuts to me, and nice work! …But (here we go again) about the timing ~ personally, I'd wait until the leaves fall. I know, a study has 'proven' nutrients formed in "water-suckers" stay in them ... but my bet is some of it's transmitted to the root system for storage.
Yes, I've advocated early pruning - on well established trees. This looks quite young, and 'to me,' in need of any extra energy it might store. I suspect the tree would be fine if you snipped them now, but there's no reason to do it this early.
OK! It's very good to know that I'm on the right track, and thanks for the advice regarding timing ... I was worried that if I cut them in monsoon season they might be more prone to disease, but if that's not a problem I'll hold off. Your guidance is, as always, much appreciated. Dorothy
