Created Paw Paw Clone Accidentally

In my yard there are a half dozen 3-year old containerized Paw Paw trees I sprouted from seed. In Spring of this year I went to move the containers. One Paw Paw container was stuck to the ground, but I pulled it free; one or more roots had grown through the container drainage holes into the ground. Last week I noticed a 6-inch high Paw Paw clone had grown from the rooted portion left in the ground.

I might try duplicating this accident, but next time I would hill up some earth around the container or bury the container a few inches in the ground and use a knife to sever the roots later.

Darrell, that's really interesting.

It looks like you just did propagation by root cuttings. I didn't know you could do that with Pawpaws. Fascinating...

Was it the main tap-root? Did the tree live?

The little tree is 6" tall and seems fine growing in partial shade under a large mulberry tree. It may have been the taproot that was severed but not sure. The new green spring growth was just beginning to show from the original tree's terminal bud when I moved the pot. That's supposed to be the optimal time for real transplanting, so maybe it helped as did the fact that the severed root never got dug up.

Most people say it's hard to transplant Paw paws. Maybe you can say it's hard to kill pawpaws.

I think Jade was asking if the main tree survived the transplant. I'm also curious, but I assume it did or you would have mentioned it.

Nothing really got transplanted. The container tree lost a bit of root when I tugged the container away from the ground. The container tree is still doing fine in the same old plastic nursery pot (3 gallon?) its been in for 3 years now.

BTW, there are a couple other of my container Paw Paw trees that are sending up a sucker clone. They're also 3-year-old plants in either #2 or #3 nursery pots. I wasn't aware they would do this while still in containers.
