Bottom line-- the following like to eat codling moths:
1. Earwig
2. Carabid beetle
3. Spider

Love the thread title. I went to a conference and there was a cute girl entomologist, my favorite kind.
She said that one of the best ways to fight against SWD, codling moth, and apple maggot was to have 3D vertical yards, so spiders could do their job in nature, keeping those guys in check. This is one reason why I'm not so gung ho on espaliers.
I also find trees and bushes, even dwarf trees aesthetically pleasing in ways that espaliers are not for me. I don't live in NW Portland, so I can grow a few trees. On the other hand, NW Portland does have a lot of cute girls. I don't know how many are entomologists.
