Last spring my asian pear trees lost a lot of blossoms. I was told that it was caused by climbing cutworms. Apparently they climb up the tree at night and eat the blossoms. Anybody out there have suggestions on how to control the cutworms? Can I sprinkle some Sevin powder around the trunk of the tree and expect to control the cutworms as they begin their ascent up the tree?

Oooh, keep away from nasty stuff like Sevin if you can. Try Tanglefoot. which is the stickiest stuff I have ever encountered. It is designed for precisely the kind of attacker that climbs up trunks, and those attackers will become hopelessly stuck in it.
