Fig Heaven by Marie Simmons

Have not had an opportunity to cook from this book (just checked it out) but it has a lot of food items that look good. The book may be worth it for somebody who gets more figs than they want to eat plain. Not limited to desserts; there are salads and quite a few main dishes incorporating figs, both fresh and dried.

Sounds interesting.

I have a recipe for fig bars, using dried figs.  It's a favorite, not even remotely like the store bought fig bars.  They have a short read bottom crust, and nut topping.

Also, figs are delicious if included in vegetable kebabs on the grill.  It doesn't seem like it would be good, but they are delicious that way.  I have not included them in vegetable stir fries but imagine they would be good.

We also used them as a sweetener in a black bean chocolate cake.  Very good.

Something we sometimes do for a dessert is to cut a sprig of rosemary and use it as a skewer. Load the figs on it, then lightly brush with olive oil. Grill a couple minutes, serve as dessert. The figs come off the skewer with a rosemary infusion which is unexpectedly good. (The book offers a more involved version of this recipe, have not tried it and probably won''t - lazy.)

Are you guys choosing figs that are still somewhat firm for these cooking applications?  I imagine the fits, when I pick them, would dissolve if I attempted to saute or stir fry them.

jafar, we take figs out of the bowl of just picked figs. They do fine being grilled on the rosemary skewers, but never tried to saute or stir-fry them.

Jafar we use ripe figs on skewers with vegetables.  They are tender but when sandwiched between vegetables the hold together for the most part.  You do have to be careful.
