Are the nylon footies, the ones that Ted Swenson's article describes being used as an insect barrier for apples in place of other types of bagging, going to be available for purchase at the Scion Exchange in March?

Hi jafarj,

Yes, according to an article by Ted in the Pome News (Winter 2007):

Nylon footies will be available at the Fruit and Berry Cutting (Scion) Exchange, March 10 at Alder Creek Middle School. Cost for members is $8.00 and non-members $9.00 per box of 144. Five boxes for $35.00 and $40.00 respectively. If you want more than five boxes of nylon footies contact me before April 20. Email Ted Swensen

If you don't get the Pome News, the article also has some more tips on using & caring for them. As well as the results of the experiment:

"Nylon Footies are 100% effective against apple maggots & 96-98% effective against coddling moths"

Watch for the full article on the website soon!

I think alot of people are going to be looking to buy these. I'll want 5 or more boxes myself. Make sure y'all bring out enough to satisfy demand! *8^)

I bought 2 sets from Ted Swensen at the Scion Exchange. He disavowed any knowledge of a discount for quantity. I felt pretty dumb.

I bought 4 packages myself. I'm going to bag (sock?) every apple this year, except for a few "decoys" that I will sacrifice for the sake of experimentation. I'm hoping these socks can be "revitalized" by a trip thru the washer and dryer and reused next year. I'll post my results here in the Fall if I remember.

Hi Nylon Footie Fans:
The supplier changed packaging so that there are now 300/package at $16 for members, $18 for nonmembers and $20 by web page. Actually a "little" less/footie. :)
Let us know your success. :!:

PS The footies will be avaiable at the HOS booth at the Spring Garden Fairr, Clackamas Mater Gardeners, Clkackamas County Fair Grounds.

I put about 200 footies on my apples yesterday (5/10/07) and was pleased with the results so far.

1) Easier to install
2) Can install on even the smallest apples
3) Unobtrusive
4) Possibly reusable

I didn't quite understand Ted's instructions, so I'll take a stab myself. You slip the footie over the finger of your choice, taking care not to stretch it unduly. Insert the finger until it reches the closed end. then slide the footie off the finger, allowing the material to bunch-up as you slide the footie from the base of your finger towards the tip. It will naturally bunch up as you do this. I would recommend at least 50% of the footie should be bunched-up. Then hold the footie by the bunched-up portion, and place it over the apple and let it go. It will unbunch a bit when you do this and will nicely cover the apple and stem together. Piece of cake!

Well, phooey. I was hoping to have a reason to try these, but not a single apple set on my young Ashmead. I figured I should abort all but one if a bunch set, but I had no need to be that ruthless. My neighbor's enthusiastically blooming tree is probably a triploid...
