I have both noticed insects killing my scions with needle like appendages and new unfamiliar bad smelling bugs in my yard this year.

Get some wasps to move in. They'll kill most of these bugs for you - for free!

Wasps... They will do the job for ya. But then you have a problem with wasps! Is there not an organic insect repellent you could use or maybe 'fogging'?
