After a summer of taking too many photos, I am back to looking after my orchard better. I have an 8 year old Gala tree which I thought was a semi-dwarf but it must be a dwarf. Anyway, it always blooms nicely and sets alot of apples. I usually have to thin them and take 2/3 of them off. the remaining apples never get much bigger than golf ball size. The tree has great (maybe too much) green growth. It puts on about 24 inches of growth each year, which I prune back to keep the tree small. This year I only used bone meal to fertilize with and added a handful of calcium (I htink thats what it was). What can I do to make the tree produce bigger fruit? I know gala's probably aren't a Wolf River sized apple, but I think they should be bigger than a golf ball. The tree is healthy, the apples taste great, but just too small. Ideas appreciated.
