I grafted a number of apple trees this spring (M111 roots with M9 interstem), and was wondering what the best depth to plant them at is. I've read that they can be planted deeper than the lower graft union to allow the interstem to root, but aren't sure if this is advisable. Can anyone come up with a reason why interstem apples shouldn't be planted like this? I'd appreciate any thoughts,
thanks,
chris
No reason not to do this, if the M9 is bless prone to suckering than the M111 - I grafted about 12 apples last year, mostly this same combination though some are Antonovka/Bud9. I can't remember the specific characteristics of the M111 & M9, and too tired now to research them; but if the M9 is less prone to suckering then that's a good reason to plant them deep! There's a page in Warren Manhart's book about interstem trees, and he talks about this very thing as being one reason to do an interstem:)
