For those who are blessed with a low codling moth population but are only concerned about the apple maggot fly, the news is that this bug is also flying early this year.....and so protections need to be thought about.
the http://das.wsu.edu website for Vancouver, Washington estimates apple maggot flies will start around June 8th.....that is pretty early.
But this website model is not good at predicting Western Washington.....so the time could be earlier or later.
I would be interested to hear from others when this bug is seen flying on their properties.....thanks
Marilyn Tilbury spotted a few flies on her traps in her Seattle back yard on June 17th.....so they have arrived in some sections.....if you are in a cool, wooded area, or at a higher elevation, there is a chance they are not here but will be within a week or so. Otherwise, they are starting to fly.
Side note: Was at a local nursery today and a woman was inquiring about buying foot sox (apple maggot barriers) while I was there......see what you guys down there in Portland started?
