Yes, an interesting site. Reminds me of growing apples on the Oregon Coast; which I've family attempting to do. It's strange to read about too few 'chilling hours,' yet summer temperatures not consistently high enough to ripen more than mid-season (around here) varieties? I'm tempted to encourage our San Diego grower to describe to them his experience with lack of chilling hours; though lack of summer heat is not something he's accustomed to...

It's also sad to see people gearing up to prosper with global warming ... seems they'll end up with a vested interest in promoting its continuation, rather than battling its causes... I was once (justifiably) scolded on an HOS tour nearly two decades ago as I 'joked' about encouraging it - as a benefit to our cooler than the competition’s climate. I've never forgotten that, nor my scolder, and try never to repeat my mistake.

Growing in a Maritime Climate... I wish we had more participation from the Oregon Coast. Many I've met seem a bit embarrassed that they can't ripen, or ‘cleanly’ grow the multitude of varieties we can in the Willamette Valley (or its ‘finger valleys’). Guess that's why I head over there with summer produce, and return with perch fillets, smoked salmon and clams... But it’s amazing to be greeted by a wide-eyed neighborhood as I begin to unload my inland fruits and vegetables My Uncle once described them as "fruit starved." Perhaps they should be the ones paying more careful attention to what’s been working in the UK?
