If anyone got some of the 4285 J plum at the Scion Exchange I'd like to hear how it does for you. 4285 J refers to a Japanese-American hybrid plum found at 4285 Portland Rd. in the 1970's. The original tree is at least somewhere over 70 years old and I believe it was one of the varieties sold by Luther Burbank to the old Oregon Nursery Co. It has traits that suggest it's related to Shiro. My tree is own rooted and while it rarely has a huge crop, it always has something. Very health and the most vigorous Japanese type I've seen. It may be best on a dwarf rootstock.

Without that kind of description on ‘the can,’ and without someone at the scion tables familiar with it… I don’t suspect anyone would have taken something with such a vague ‘name.’ Looking at photos or reading descriptions of such numbered cultivars in a nursery catalog is one thing but looking at a tin can with “4285 J” marked on it would keep me moving along.

You’d be surprised how many folks show up at the grafting tables with scions of cultivars they simply thought “sounded good.” …right now I’d be wondering if 4285 J was in reference to some radioactive isotope mutant Japanese plum :?

I guess the help didn't put up the photo & description I sent with the scions.

I wouldn’t say that… I only perused the tables once, but if you’d provided this information – excellent, that’s a different story.

Well then, I hope anyone seeking further information finds your post – and disregards mine

I think they had at least part of the description up.

Lon I got scions from you a few years ago. It fruited reliably but the fruits were not very tasty compared to Santa Rosa or other high-quality Japanese plums so I took it out. My climate is a lot hotter than yours so maybe that is a factor. It was also softening too much.
